Ways to Lower Those High Heating Bills

money-saving-house

The winter weather means you have to use your heating system to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature in your home. And that also means you can expect to see higher energy bills each month. There’s no way around some increase in your energy costs during winter (unless you’re committed to living in unsafe and miserable conditions), but you don’t have to have the costs become unreasonable.

If you think you’re currently paying too much to heat your home, you can take several steps to lower those costs. Below are several key ways to get those bills under control.

Remember to have the heating system professionally maintained

This is the most important step when it comes to wrangling heating bills (as well as preventing repair bills and a high price to replace your heater early.) Our professionals come to your home to give your heater a complete tune-up so it consumes less energy during the winter. We recommend having maintenance done during the fall, but it’s not too late to schedule it and get the benefits of better performance from your heater.

Low and steady thermostat settings

What’s the best temperature to set the thermostat so you’ll save energy? We recommend you aim for 68°F during the day when people are home, further lowering it by 8° at night or when the house is empty. If this feels too cold for your household, set the thermostat higher and then lower it by one degree each day. Avoid changing the thermostat up and down during the day or night, as this can cause the heater to run wastefully.

Change the air filters on a regular basis

The air filter for your heating system keeps the interior of the heater protected from dust and debris, but it will get dirtier through the season. When it becomes more clogged, it will restrict airflow and force the heating system to work harder than necessary. If you change the filter regularly, you’ll avoid this. A good schedule is every 1–3 months, with stronger filters needing to be changed less frequently.

Never delay with any heating repair

If you think your heating system is malfunctioning, always call for heating repair in Conyers, GA as soon as possible. Even if the problem is something like odd noises that aren’t affecting the temperature (yet), it’s important to have the problem addressed soon or it will lead to wasteful operation. Plus, having repairs done promptly will keep the heater running safely.

Use radiant heat from the sun to help

Allow as much sunlight into your home as possible by keeping the shades open at the right time of day. The radiant energy from the sun will add heat to your home, and it doesn’t cost anything!

Improve your insulation

Poor insulation will allow heat to rapidly escape from your house, putting more strain on the heater to replace that heat and running up costs. You may need to replace older insulation that’s no longer doing the job. We work with insulation and can help find places where your home is losing heat so we can improve it. (And it helps to keep heat out during the summer as well.)
