Got a Dead AC Compressor Before the Start of Summer? Here Are Your Options

compressor-in-ac-unit

One of the best reasons to always schedule air conditioning maintenance in spring is because it will catch problems before the hot weather begins, giving you time to correct them. One of the biggest problems a technician may discover during an AC inspection is that the compressor has failed. If you didn’t know about this ahead of time, you would have turned your cooling system on during the first hot day and gotten … room-temperature air. No cooling at all!

The compressor is one of the most important parts of an AC: it’s where most of the energy used to cool a house goes. The compressor is also an expensive component. It’s costly enough that when it fails, the conventional wisdom is that the whole air conditioning system needs to be replaced. Is this always the case? Let’s look at the options you’ll have when you’ve got a dead compressor

Option #1: Replace the Compressor

Yes, the compressor is an expensive piece, comparable to the engine of a car. However, if the compressor is still under warranty, then the cost is far less. You’ll still have to pay for labor costs, but the part itself will be included under the warranty. Always check on the warranty first before you make any other choice about the compressor—the decision may be an easy one.

Option #2: Replace the Condenser

If the compressor isn’t covered and the cost to replace it is too high to justify, you may choose to replace only the outdoor condenser unit. This part contains the compressor, exhaust fan, and condenser coil. This is less expensive than a full air conditioner replacement, but we strongly advise against it unless your current budget is tight. (Our financing options can definitely help you out.) The problem with replacing only the condenser and not the indoor refrigerant coil is that it risks a mismatched system, and that will result in an inefficient AC that won’t last much longer.

Option #3: Replace the Air Conditioner

This means replacing the condenser and the indoor evaporator coil. This is what we recommend if your compressor is no longer under warranty. This not only ensures a properly matched system, it also provides you with a new warranty, which is something you won’t get if you only do a condenser replacement. By replacing the whole system, you can also take advantage of newer, more energy-efficient technology, which can save money on energy costs.

Option #4: Replace the Entire HVAC System

You may wish to go beyond getting a new AC and upgrade the entire HVAC system. Yes, this is the most expensive option, but if you have an aging heating system, it’s cost-effective to have it replaced along with the air conditioner rather than at a later date. You can always ask your technicians about the state of your heater and if it’s also coming close to the end of its life.
