Don’t Put Off These Furnace Issues Until Next Year!

cardboard house in the hand against the blue sky

While it’s still officially winter, here in Georgia, we’ve been enjoying some warmer weather. You may be enjoying our shoulder season where it’s not cold enough that you need to run your heating system, but not hot enough that you need the AC.

This bout of balmy weather may have you thinking that you won’t need your furnace until next year. You may even have some furnace issues going on that you’re fairly certain you can wait to address next year. However, there are some examples of furnace repair that shouldn’t be put off, no matter how small they may seem. Let’s go over three furnace issues that can’t wait until the next heating season.

1. The Furnace Won’t Turn On

Imagine this scenario: it’s a nice, sunny day in the high 50s or low 60s but that lightweight sweater you have on isn’t keeping you as warm as you’d like. So you switch on your heating system but it doesn’t turn on. You decide to put on another layer and worry about that another day.

But a furnace that doesn’t turn on isn’t something that should be put off until the next cold snap. It’s February and that next bout of cold weather has the potential to be really cold. The weather here is just too unpredictable to bet on not needing your heating system until next year. Give us a call to take a look at why your furnace isn’t turning on.

2. The Furnace Turns On and Off

A furnace that turns on and off—and on and off—multiple times throughout the day is having a tough time. This is called short cycling and it happens when your furnace can’t complete a heating cycle.

The really bad thing about short cycling is that it causes tremendous wear and tear on your system at an accelerated rate. That’s because the start-up process requires the most amount of power. Short cycling rarely improves on its own and can lead to a full system breakdown and a potentially expensive repair.

3. The Furnace Is Making Loud Noises

Your furnace should operate quietly. Other than some clicking noises when it starts up and powers down, and the “whoosh” of air from the vents, you shouldn’t hear much else. So when your furnace starts making weird noises, it’s a sign that something is going wrong.

If the sounds aren’t extremely loud, you may be tempted to ignore them. But don’t wait until the furnace is making a ruckus to call for repair. Even fairly quiet sounds that are unusual can still become huge problems if left unchecked.

If you have a gas furnace, some sounds such as a mini booming noise or repeated clicking (not just at startup and shutdown) could even be potentially dangerous. Definitely get any unusual sounds checked out promptly!

You never know what the forecast will bring. Schedule your late-heating season repairs with us today.
