The Link Between Heating Maintenance and Repairs

old-furnace

Every homeowner knows that maintenance is incredibly important for their HVAC systems. And yet, this essential furnace service is often overlooked. The main point we want to drive home for homeowners is that maintenance is easily a service that pays for itself and in fact, saves you money both in the short term and the long run!

That’s because there’s a link between furnace maintenance and costly repairs that could’ve been prevented. 80% of furnace repairs are made on systems that haven’t received regular maintenance. Let’s go over all the ways that tune-ups save you money.

Fewer Repairs

As we mentioned, there’s a direct correlation between maintenance and repairs. The former prevents the latter from happening. While maintenance isn’t a 100% guarantee that you’ll never need a repair job, it greatly decreases the frequency of repair needs.

When maintenance is neglected, our technicians lose the chance to catch small problems that are percolating just beneath the surface. Depending on the severity of the repair, you may find that you’re without the use of your heating system when it’s terribly inconvenient as well.

Warranty Protection

One of the requirements of a furnace warranty is that the system must receive annual tune-ups. If your furnace has a major problem and you can’t prove that it’s had regular maintenance, you’ll be stuck with the cost of that repair and any repairs going forward. Don’t risk losing the protection a warranty provides by foregoing those required tune-ups.

Decreased Energy Bills and Increased Efficiency

During a maintenance tune-up, our technicians check and test many different components to make sure they’re all working as they should. They’ll also clean your furnace to optimize its efficiency. The result is a system that is working as well as it possibly can, decreasing the amount of energy you’re using along with lowering your energy bills. The holiday season is when every penny counts, so don’t throw away money on a neglected furnace.

Increased Peace of Mind

Both gas and electric furnaces have safety features to help ensure they run safely. But when these systems are neglected, the potential for a life-threatening incident increases—especially if you have an old, outdated furnace.

Safety is on the mind of our technicians when performing maintenance. For gas furnaces, they’ll clean the burners and check the health of the pilot light. For electric furnaces, electrical connections will be checked. A regularly maintained furnace is a safer furnace, and that’ll bring peace of mind.

Longer Lifespan

The average furnace, heat pump, and air conditioner has an estimated service life of 10–15 years. However, this only applies to systems that have received maintenance on a regular basis. That means once a year for furnaces and twice a year for heat pumps.

By neglecting maintenance entirely, you’re essentially shortening the lifespan of your heating system. You could eventually face the horrible situation of needing to replace your system at the 6–8 year mark because neglecting maintenance can shorten the lifespan by half. That’s an expense that no homeowner can afford! Maintenance easily pays for itself in this way.
