The service life expectancies for heating systems depend on the type:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Gas furnace:<\/em> 15 years<\/li><li><em>Electric furnace:<\/em> 20 years<\/li><li><em>Heat pump &amp; ductless:<\/em> 10\u201315 years<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Although a heater can exceed its estimate, we don\u2019t recommend you try to push your heater too far past it, as it increases the chance of the other problems listed below and may even lead to the heater developing safety hazards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Operating costs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even with the best regular maintenance, a heater will wear down over time. This wear and tear will cause the system to lose energy efficiency and start to raise the cost to run it. If you notice that your heating bills are steadily rising even though you aren\u2019t using the heater more often than usual, it\u2019s a warning that the heater is in the last year of its service life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Uneven heating<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the major signs that a heater is losing its capacity is when it starts to heat the house unevenly. The center of the house may still get enough warmth, but other rooms will develop cold spots. Repairs may be able to fix this, but if the heater is already old, it\u2019s probably more cost-effective to have it replaced.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Too many repairs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You shouldn\u2019t need to schedule repairs for your heating system every year just to keep it running. That\u2019s turning into a money sink\u2014money that should go toward getting a replacement. In general, you shouldn\u2019t pay for any repair that\u2019s more than half the cost of getting a new heater.
