Split Systems vs. Mini Split Systems<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The best way to explain how a ductless mini split system works is to start with a standard air conditioner\/heat pump, which is known as a split system<\/em>. You\u2019re familiar with this type: an outdoor condenser unit that connects to an indoor evaporator and air handler. The compressor in the outdoor unit places refrigerant under pressure so it circulates between the indoor and outdoor units. As the refrigerant moves through the indoor coil, it either absorbs or releases heat, and the air handler sends this conditioned air into ductwork where it moves to the rooms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a ductless system, there\u2019s still a single outdoor unit with a compressor and coil. But instead of one indoor unit, there are multiple smaller units, each with its own coil and blower fan. These small units don\u2019t need ducts connected to them because they are placed on the walls in different rooms. Power, refrigerant, and condensate lines pass through the wall behind them to connect to the outdoor unit. The coils in the wall-mounted units either heat or cool the air, and the blower sends the conditioned air directly into the rooms\u2014no need for ducts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wall-mounted units are operated through remote controls from each room. They don\u2019t need to all come on at one time, but can be turned on and off as needed using the remote controls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can think of the system as similar to window ACs, which also send cooling straight into a room without ducts. But ductless systems don\u2019t need to block windows, and their compressors and other noisy parts are placed outside, where they can send refrigerant to multiple indoor units. It\u2019s central cooling and heating\u2014but without an inch of ductwork.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
