But <em>how<\/em> much more are you planning to turn it up? Higher than you normally do? If so, that\u2019s not right. If the filter for your furnace or heat pump is left in place from earlier in the year, it\u2019s probably congested with dust and lint, and this will impair its ability to warm up enough air and distribute it to the rest of the house. Take out the filter and put in a clean one to see if this fixes the heating problem.<\/li><li><strong>Short-cycling: <\/strong>Is the heater turning on and off more frequently than usual? If it\u2019s spending ten minutes or less running before turning off, it\u2019s <em>short-cycling<\/em>. There are many different causes for this, and not only will it mean the heater won\u2019t stay on long enough to properly warm the house, but it will also put immense strain on the heating system that will wear it down and raise your bills.<\/li><li><strong>Leaky ventilation system: <\/strong>The ductwork of the ventilation system may be the problem. Air leaks allowing heated air to escape will cause a drop in air pressure as well as heating. This will also cause a spike in bills along with a decline in comfort. Only professionals can accurately locate and seal a leaky ventilation system.<\/li><li><strong>An over-the-hill heater: <\/strong>A loss of heating capacity could simply signal that the heater is too old to work effectively anymore. Furnaces and heat pumps will often start to suffer from capacity loss when they\u2019re older than fifteen years.
