The central heating system is running, parts of the house are warming up to comfortable levels, but some rooms stay cold. If the house has always had this problem, then the issue is likely poor insulation in those rooms. You can improve the insulation or ask our HVAC team for options like using ductless mini splits to help those hard-to-warm spots.

If, however, the uneven heating is a new phenomenon, the HVAC system is probably the culprit. We’re going to look at what might be wrong with the heater and recommend the appropriate heating service in Decatur, GA that may be able to correct it.

The heater is undersized

If the uneven heating problem started after you had a new heating system installed, you probably have a heater that is too small and underpowered to evenly heat the whole house. This unfortunate situation often occurs when amateurs install a new heating system. They don’t take the time required to properly determine the necessary heating load for a house. The only way to correct this is to replace the heater—and make sure the people who install it are seasoned experts like ours at Premier.

A dirty air filter has been left in place

The air filter for your HVAC system needs to be replaced with a clean one every 1–3 months (depending on the filter’s strength). If a dirty filter remains in place, it will restrict airflow into the heater and reduce the amount of heated air that will go to the rooms. Check on the filter to see if it’s clogged with dust, lint, and other debris. If it is, put in a clean one to see if this corrects the problem.

The heater is short-cycling

Short-cycling is when a heater rapidly turns on and off, never completing a full heating cycle. This can happen with heat pumps and furnaces. There are many potential causes of short-cycling (including a clogged filter), many which will require professionals to locate and fix. Not only does short-cycling lead to uneven heating (the heater isn’t staying on long enough to reach all the rooms), it also puts excess stress on the heating system that will run up energy bills and lower the equipment’s service life.

The thermostat is malfunctioning

The issue may stem from the brains controlling the heater: the thermostat. A thermostat can become miscalibrated so it picks up the wrong temperature in the house, leading to it shutting the heater off before it’s had time to evenly heat the home. Fortunately, this is a basic problem for technicians to fix. There are other potential thermostat problems that can affect the HVAC system, especially if the house has zone controls, that can cause cold spots in rooms.

The heater is too old

Uneven heating is one of the big warning signs that an older heating system has started to decline. If your heater is at or over its estimated service life, we recommend you call in our technicians to examine the system. We can see if it’s cost-effective to repair the unit or if it’s better to have a new unit installed.

Experience the Premier Difference!
